Once upon a time there were two brothers, Hibito and Mutta. Hibito, the littler brother, had been blessed with good luck since the day he was born. Mutta, the elder, had always had bad luck. One day, the two brothers saw a UFO. This experience made them decide to become astronauts. And while Hibito succeeded, Mutta went to work for a car company. ©Chuya Koyama,Kodansha/YTV,A-1 Pictures

The year is 2006. Mutta (12 years old) and Hibito (9 years old) happen to witness a UFO heading to the moon, and are so moved that they make a "promise". Time passes, and it is now 2025. Mutta, the older brother, is feeling down after being fired from his job, when he receives a fateful email from his younger brother Hibito, who has become an astronaut.

Mutta passed the written examination for the selection of new astronauts. However, he was unsure whether to take the next first round of screening. After much deliberation, Mutta went to meet Sharon, who works at an astronomical observatory. Sharon began to talk about the day Mutta chose his first instrument as a child. "What is the most gold-plated thing to you right now?"

Although he made it to the second round of auditions, Mutta witnessed other applicants putting in more effort than he did. Just as he was fretting about having to do better than he did, the lung capacity test began. While the other applicants quickly gave up, only Mutta and Ito Serika were able to put up an evenly matched fight. What will be the outcome of the match?

The second round of auditions at JAXA lasted a week, and all that remained was the final interview. Mutta, who had been compared to his younger brother Hibito, an astronaut, and had been the center of unwanted attention, was determined to make the most of this opportunity. "I'm not just Hibito Nanba's older brother!" Will Mutta be able to pass the interview and aim for space?

Mutta came to Houston, USA for free using NASA's family support program. Although he was chased by a pug named APO, he was safely reunited with Hibito. That night, he accidentally overhears Hibito's true feelings. "Come on, you better compete... that's boring," he says to Mutta. What does Hibito really mean?

At Hibito's invitation, Mutta finally visits the home of space, NASA's Johnson Space Center. There, he sees the samurai boy, Hibito, undergoing more intense training than anyone else. Mutta becomes jealous and depressed, but is hit even harder when he learns that he is on the verge of failing the JAXA audition!

After hearing a call from a former junior colleague saying that his ex-boss had spread lies and bad things about Mutta to JAXA, Mutta transformed into Korokoromutta, who single-mindedly collects rubbish information and rubbish knowledge. Hibito questions Mutta, wondering if something had happened. Meanwhile, in Houston, a robber known as the Fire Extinguisher Man is causing a stir in the streets.

Mutta was attacked by a robber, the Fire Extinguisher Man, and found himself in a pinch, but in the end, he courageously defeated the criminal and became a popular hero for saving the citizens. He also appeared on TV, where Ozzy passionately spoke about how Mutta had hit the criminal with a diving head shot. While the audience grew increasingly excited, Mutta was on stage, alone.

Mutta was to return to Japan to take the third round of the audition. However, his expression was stiff, and he was having nightmares even on the plane. The reason was that he had accidentally found a letter from Hibito before returning to Japan. The contents of the letter was a "suicide note" addressed to his parents and himself.

Mutsuta learns that Kenji and Serika are also aiming for space with strong determination and motivation. However, he only has a longing for space. Compared to the other applicants, he wonders what he has. Sharon eases Mutsuta's mind. Awaiting Mutsuta and the other applicants at the third audition venue is a strange bus with all the windows blocked up with iron plates!

Mutta and the other test-takers finally arrive at their destination. It is a bleak, vast indoor space, and an eerie space where nothing outside can be seen. Not knowing how many hours have passed since their departure, the test-takers become increasingly anxious. Led by a JAXA staff member, Mutta and the others move further.

The first task given to Groups A, B, and C in their closed boxes was a quiz: "What time is it now?" However, the members of Group A quickly became divided in their opinions. While the other four answered that it was around 6AM, only Mutta answered that it was 3AM. Mutta spoke as if he had some kind of winning strategy: "Actually, I know a number that no one else knows."

In the closed box, they were given a series of tasks, such as "calculation running" and "typing tests." Another task was to "write a persuasive essay to a harsh newscaster who criticized the space development project, which requires a large budget." This difficult task reminded Mutta of a story about "three-dimensional ants" that he had heard from astronaut Noguchi when he was a child.

By the fifth day of the training camp in the closed box, each group's personality has begun to emerge. Group A is lively, Group C is peaceful and calm, but only Group B, where Kenji is, has a slightly tense atmosphere. Group B is made up of intelligent members, but their pride gets in the way and walls form between them. However, problems arise for Group A, including Mutsuta.

The training camp in the closed box is also in the second half. In Group A, where Mutta and the others are, an accident occurs in which Fukuda's glasses break, but the situation is progressing calmly. Meanwhile, in Group B, where Kenji is, an incident occurs in which an alarm goes off in the middle of the night. Not only in Group B, but also in Group A, an unexpected incident occurs.

The third exam is in the second half. While putting together the blank puzzle, Mutta's mind is clouded. In Group A, an incident has occurred in which the only clock in the closed box has been broken by an unknown hand. Mutta witnessed the culprit being Fukuda, the beloved leader of the group. He makes up his mind and asks him why, but...?

Unexpected problems occurred one after another in each group. The only clock was broken, so the test-takers could no longer tell the time, and the alarm sounded in the middle of the night, causing sleep deprivation; the test-takers were getting more and more stressed. Mutta was feeling uneasy and thinking hard.

JAXA intentionally gave everyone the command to "cause trouble." It was a test called the "Green Card" to see how astronauts would respond to stress and trouble. Luckily, Mutta was able to notice it, but... In Kenji's B group, there was clearly a crack in the relationships between the members.

There are only two days left of life in the closed box. In Group B, where Kenji is, the atmosphere is about to change to the desired one as Kenji stands up. Meanwhile, in Group A, Mutsuta is about to announce something important. "I have good news, bad news, and some tricky news - which would you like to hear first?"

Life inside the closed box has finally reached its final day. Mutta wants to choose the two people most suitable to be astronauts in a way that doesn't destroy the relationship between the five of them and that everyone can agree on. As he is hesitating and fretting, Mutta remembers Sharon's words: "When in doubt, decide based on which is more fun." What is the best method that Mutta suggests?

August 19, 2012 • 24m•U/A 13+
It's the last day of the third test to select astronauts. The method that Mutta proposed was "rock-paper-scissors." The other members agreed with this unusual suggestion, and it was decided that Group A would decide by rock-paper-scissors. The match was decided in just one go. The closed box is opened, and Mutta and the others go outside.

Nitta and Serika won the rock-paper-scissors game that put their lives on the line. A few days later, the members of Team A gathered at a launch party to celebrate the pair. The six people chosen from each team will travel to Houston along with a few others to be selected by JAXA. So, even those who weren't chosen this time still have a chance. Mutta is betting on that chance, but...?

It was announced that eight people would be going to Houston. Mutta managed to slip into that group, but he hadn't heard anything from JAXA and he was worried about Kenji. There was also something else that bothered him. Mutta's cake was the only one with a shallow angle. "The angle of the cake is proportional to how hard you work. If you're a man, you should earn more than your father."

Having arrived in Houston before the other candidates, Mutta was able to see Hibito training for the moon landing up close, but then he heard some worrying news from Jennifer. Everyone thought that Azuma, not Hibito, would be the first Japanese astronaut to land on the moon. It seems this could have an impact on Mutta's test...

Before the final exam, Jennifer tells him some unpleasant news. Azuma, who is a judge for Mutsuta's final interview, is jealous of Hibito, who was chosen as the first Japanese person to land on the moon. Mutsuta wants to do something to prepare for the exam, but he is so anxious that he can't think of anything. What should he do now? What can he do? Will Mutsuta be able to find the answer?
